The Lakers have emerged as a darkhorse in the race for Steve Nash's signature during the free agency period. As the Knicks scramble to make sure the two-time MVP lands in Gotham, and the Raptors throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Nash to lure him back home, the Lakers are hoping that a possible championship with the franchise is enough to get him on a reduced salary than what the others can offer. Los Angeles would only be able to give Nash an exception starting at $3.09 million for next season, unless he were to arrive as part of a sign-and-trade package. According to David Aldridge, Nash is giving New York every opportunity to come up with a syuitable sign-and-trade for the Suns to accept but the Lakers are preparing a package of their own. Players being rumored to be part of the deal include, Metta World Peace, Ramon Sessions, Matt Barnes and Jordan Hill. Keeping their core of Kobe, Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum, along with a possible addition of Nash could catapult the Lakers back to the top of the Western standings.
