The Atlanta Hawks have agreed to send Joe Johnson to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for a bunch of expiring contracts in what amounts to a salary dump for the franchise. Johnson, who still has 4-years, and $90 million, remaining on his deal will hopefully join Deron Williams in the Brooklyn backcourt once the Barclays Center opens later in the year. The deal was originally predicated on the assurance that Williams would return but according to reports, it is scheduled to go ahead regardless.

The Nets will send the Hawks the expiring contracts of Jordan Farmar, Johan Petro, Anthony Morrow, Jordan Williams and DeShawn Stevenson (in a sign-and-trade) and a future first-round pick (lottery-protected in 2013 via Houston) to Atlanta in exchange for Johnson.

The size of Johnson's contract, along with possibly re-signing Williams and young center Brook Lopez, would make the task of landing Dwight Howard almost impossible. The deal has been agreed to in principle but is yet to be officially ratified.
