The Charlotte Bobcats are set to officially announce former Adelaide 36ers coach Mike Dunlap as their new head basketball coach on Thursday. Dunlap was a surprise choice, especially since former NBA players Patrick Ewing and Brian Shaw were also in consideration for the position, along with former Jazz coach Jerry Sloan who withdrew himself from the running last week. Dunlap replaces Paul Silas whose contract was not renewed after Charlotte finished with the worst winning percentage in NBA history this past season.

The Bobcats were 7-59.

Dunlap has spent the majority of his coaching career at the collegiate level but does have two seasons as an assistant to George Karl at the Nuggets on his resume. Dunlap also coached the Adelaide 36ers in the NBL dring the mid-90's (59-36 win-loss record from 1994 to 1996) and helped the club reach the 1994 Grand Final against the North Melbourne Giants.

The Bobcats are to introduce the new coach at a press conference on Thursday.
