As impressive as JR Smith's tenure was in China, it seems that the former Nuggets player couldn't help being the old JR Smith. Reports appeared yesterday from China indicating that Smith was fined $1.06 million for repeated failure to turn up to practice sessions with his team. The total equaled out to one-third of his total salary, deducted because he missed an unspecified number of practices while playing for Zhejiang Chouzhou.
According to Zhejiang Chouzhou GM Zhao Bing, Smith preferred the fines to actually turning up to practice with teammates.
"This was the arrangement when he came to the team,” Zhejiang Chouzhou GM Zhao Bing told reporters in Asia. “Every practice we let him know. If he expressed to us that he wasn’t going to come to practice, we’d tell him that in accordance with our contract, we’re deducting money from your salary. And he’d always get back to us with, ‘Whatever. If you’re going to take it, then just take it.’ ”
Smith returned to the NBA last Sunday and debuted for the Knicks against Dallas.
