Anyone who has ever played basketball outdoors understands the allure of the blacktop. To play basketball on New York City's famed playground courts is another thing altogether, the mystique of 'The City', matched with it's rich history of ballers, is the subject of a new film by co-directed by basketball fanatics, Bobbito Garcia and Kevin Couliau.

The film explores the definition, history, culture, and social impact of New York’s outdoor summer b-ball scene, the worldwide “Mecca” of the sport.

In New York City, pick-up basketball is not just a sport. It is a way of life. There are 700+ outdoor courts, and an estimated 500,000 players, the most loyal of which approach the game as a religion, and the playground as their church.

Co-directors Bobbito Garcia and Kevin Couliau visited 180 courts throughout NYC’s five boroughs to create their debut documentary and the film includes interviews with a veritable who's who of the biggest names in NY playground history. God Shammgod, Julius "Dr. J" Erving, Kenny Anderson, Kenny "The Jet" Smith, Tim “Headache” Gittens and of course, a name that resonates strongly with Australian basketball fans, Corey "Homicide" Williams.

The film is scheduled for a release mid-year, follow the guys on Facebook and on Twitter.
